Berlin is one of the most-visited cities in Europe but unfortunately I'm yet to get there myself.  To find out some of the secrets to get the most out of a visit to Berlin, I asked Svetlana Monastyrsk from Germany Tourism to help.  Svet lived in Berlin for a year during her student days and now returns to the city she loves as often as possible. She agreed to share some of her 'insider' tips to Berlin with us.

Must-see sights

Favourite place or area to stay

Depends on what you like! Mitte for shopping and the main sights, or Kreuzberg for street art, cool bars and cafes.

Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin

Best place to eat

Street food – Mustafas

Restaurant – Pauly Saal

KaDeWe is a grand department store in the former western part of the city. There is a ‘gourmet’ section which is a lot of fun to visit.

Best way to get around the city

Definitely the train – it's very easy and reliable.

Local specialities

Make sure to try some Turkish food in Berlin, namely a döner kebab (from Mustafas!) as well as the famous Berlin ‘currywurst’.

Best way to spend a lazy Sunday in Berlin?

Head to Mauerpark flea market. There are so many fantastic stalls and some really unique finds. This is in particular a very special place to visit in the summer months as they have outdoor karaoke - you see some amazing performances!

My hidden secret

Not really a hidden secret, but my big tip is just to make sure to get out of the city centre and spend some time exploring the different districts and neighbourhoods such as Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain. Each has its own character and highlights. Berlin is rapidly changing, so there are always fascinating places to discover.
