Tips and Inspiration for your European holiday

In May 2012 I spent three nights at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Zurich in Switzerland. As Zurich is a pretty expensive city, I chose the hotel based on price, knowing that Crowne Plaza Hotels are always of a high standard. Here's my review ...

Despite being about 15 minutes from the centre of Zurich (by tram or taxi), I found it easy to get to and from the hotel. The nearest tram stop into the city centre (Albisrieden) is only a five minute walk from the hotel and each day I used the tram to get into the city for my sightseeing. The day I arrived, I took a taxi from the main railway station to the hotel and it cost around CHF30.

Right by the tram stop, you'll find a range of shops and services including two supermarkets, hairdressers, banks, restaurants and cafes.

The hotel is modern and provides all the essentials for a pleasant stay, including tea and coffee facilities in the room. My room, a standard double, was on the small side but was extremely comfortable and had a modern finish. Also in the room were a safe, mini bar, iron and ironing board, TV and desk. The bathroom included toiletries, and whilst it didn't have a bathtub, the shower was quite roomy.

Various room sizes are available including family rooms and suites.

Other hotel facilities include a pool and a gym (although renovations are taking place until October 2013). WiFi was available in the room for the reasonable price of CHF10 per day and computers were located in the lobby for guests travelling without a laptop, iPad, etc.

My room rate included buffet breakfast each morning and the selection at the buffet was excellent. Everything from bread, cereal, yoghurt and fresh fruits, to cooked fare like sausages, eggs and pancakes was available.

On my last evening I dined in the Letzileu restaurant where I enjoyed a superb meal. I arrived around 6.30pm and was the only one in the restaurant so I had the full attention of the waiter! The meal wasn't cheap - I paid around CHF70 for a garden salad followed by Zuricher Veal (sliced veal in a cream sauce) with vegetables, and a glass of wine - but it was definitely worth it. It capped off an enjoyable stay at the hotel. (And yes, more guests arrived just as I was finishing my meal!)

Hotel rates start at around CHF264 (AUD261) per night (on the hotel's website). I pre-booked with a wholesale company and paid in full before I left home, securing a rate of $570 AUD for 3 nights.

Overall I would recommend the hotel and would have no hesitation in staying there again. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful, the restaurant was excellent and the internet charges were not over the top. The public transport system in Zurich makes the hotel very accessible to central Zurich, and the rooms were of the normal high Crowne Plaza standard.
