Bon Appetit! The joys of eating in Europe

Typical Swiss mealOne of the great things about travel, no matter where you go, is sampling the local food. Europeans place a great deal of emphasis on eating, and meal times are a very important part of the day, with family lunches often lasting two or three hours. With a German born mother-in-law living not far away, I had already discovered the joys of Wiener schnitzel, potato salad and apple strudel long before my first visit to Europe, however I am more than willing to sample the ‘local’ versions and am always suitably impressed!

Swiss train with panoramic windowsSwitzerland offers some of the most spectacular train rides in the world, some of which are more well known than others.  I've had the opportunity to travel on a number of scenic trains in Switzerland and each one offers something a little different.  One thing they all offer, though, is magnificent views from the comfort of your seat.

Bernina ExpressOn my visits to Switzerland over the years I have been lucky enough to to enjoy a number of spectacular train rides in this picturesque country. Switzerland does train travel so well and with panoramic windows offering jaw-dropping views, it's no wonder this form of transport is so popular even though the country is relatively small.

Here are my thoughts on three of the Swiss train rides I have experienced.

Food allergy translation cardsIf you have a food allergy or intolerance, travelling overseas, particularly to a country where you don't speak the language, can be a bit of a concern. Most of us like to eat at local restaurants and cafes when we are on holidays but with a language barrier, making your dietary requirements known can be difficult.

Rail travel in EuropeYou likely have an idealized version of Europe in your head of riding the rails across the continent, backpack slung across your shoulder, meeting other travellers and mingling with locals. However, travelling across the continent by car also has its own advantages and idealized images for many. These images usually include driving to beautiful vineyards and visiting small towns far away from the hectic, tourist-heavy cities.

My Trafalgar Tour experience

Chillon Castle, Lake GenevaApart from a 14 day Contiki tour on my first trip to Europe over 20 years ago, all my holidays in Europe have been of the independent variety. Hubby and I (and the kids) have always preferred to hire or lease a car or travel by train on our European adventures. We plan our itinerary so that we are based in one town for at least three or four nights, giving us reasonable time to really discover the area, see the sights and have some rest time if we feel like it. This year, however, with a week to fill on my own in Switzerland, I opted to join a Trafalgar Tour, and I'm really pleased I did.
