Marrakesh, an intoxicating temptation for the senses

PDFPrintE-mail
Riad courtyard, MarrakeshMarrakesh is a study in contrasts – and be warned, it’s intoxicating. On the one hand your senses are assaulted by the tempo, noise levels, smells, and vibrant colours. And yet, there are places of total serenity; calm and quiet.

Top 10 sights in Prague

PDFPrintE-mail
Prague Castle and St Vitus' CathedralSince 1989, when it broke free from it's Communist past, Prague has become one of Eastern Europe's most-visited cities and with some stunning architecture, history and natural beauty, it's no wonder the Czech capital is a popular tourist destination.

Prague is definitely worth more than a day's visit but if you only have limited time in this lovely city, make sure you enjoy some of the sights below which are regarded as Prague's Top 10 (in no particular order).

Genova, Italy's premier maritime city

PDFPrintE-mail
Piazza Ferrari, GenoaWith a reputation as a rapidly growing industrial city, many travellers decide to steer clear of Liguria's Genova, located on the northern coast of the Mediterranean, in Italy. However, this may be a poor decision as Genova is also a city rich with history and beauty.

Postcard-perfect Provence

PDFPrintE-mail
Lavendar fields in ProvenceJust hearing the name Provence conjures up visions of blazing colour from fields bursting with lavender to the sparkling blue waters of the Cote d'Azur and from the limestone crags of the Alpilles to the wetlands of the Camargue.

If you are planning a stay in Provence, you'll be spoilt for things to see and do. Within an hour one can drive from Avignon on the Rhone to limestone crags of the Alpilles, then down to the wetlands of the Camargue, a natural wonderland and home of white horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes. The mountains provide both pedestals for Provence's village hill towns and a backdrop that resembles one vast garden, with fragrant fields of lavender among silvery olive groves.

Rome in three days

PDFPrintE-mail
San Pietro Basilica, RomeBeing the capital of Italy and having so many tourist attractions, its no wonder that Rome is so popular. I was lucky enough to have a short stay there during one of Italy's public holidays, the Immaculate Conception (Thursday, 8 December, 2011).

It's easy to tell immediately that the Italian (all European countries, actually) train/metro system is very efficient and somewhat superior to those in Australia, mainly because the locals and tourists rely on it. I was informed by locals that pick-pockets are still active, particularly in the Roman Metro, so it pays to be very cautious.

Geneva, the heart of Europe

PDFPrintE-mail
Lake GenevaAs the world headquarters for the Red Cross, the International Olympic Committee, World Health Organisation and the European seat of the United Nations, Geneva is a truly international city. Situated on the border of France and Switzerland, Geneva is a mix of both countries and most residents are bilingual in both German and French, and often many other languages as well. In fact, with so many international organisations housed here, there's barely a language you won't hear! Because of the number of nationalities, you'll frequently see Geneva referred to as Genf (German) and Geneve (French), whilst the French know Lake Geneva as Lac Leman and the Germans call it Genfersee.

Beautiful Bergen

PDFPrintE-mail
Bryggen wharf, BergenFlying into Bergen as part of a quick three day visit to Norway we were greeted with grey skies, despite it being the middle of summer. By the time we reached the centre of town, though, a quick 20 minute bus ride from the airport, the clouds had parted and Bergen was bathed in sunshine. And what a glorious sight it was!

Alighting at the Fish Market around midday, we were right in the heart of Bergen and it was just a five minute walk, even with our luggage in tow, to our hotel, the Scandic Hotel Neptun. Our room, which we'd pre-booked in Australia, was huge, with a separate bedroom and large living area. Like other hotels we'd stayed at on this visit to Scandinavia, the hotel provided free Wi-Fi.
