The natural beauty of Swiss and Austrian lakes

PDFPrintE-mail
Austrian lakes, Zell am SeeThere's something about a lake that is so calming and restful. I was reminded of this over the New Year's break whilst enjoying a few nights in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales and it made me realise just what it is that I love so much about visiting Switzerland and Austria.

With their towering mountains providing plenty of water run-off to fill hundreds of lakes, Austria and Switzerland provide some of the most stunning scenery and sparkling lakes in all of Europe. From larger lakes in cities like Geneva and Lucerne, to tiny lakes in gorgeous rural settings, they all provide the perfect ingredients to really unwind.

The natural beauty and sparkling clear waters are the first thing you'll notice about these alpine lakes, but in many cases, the lakes have been important avenues for transport in years gone by. These days it's mainly pleasure boats you'll see gliding along the smooth waters whether they be paddlesteamers, yachts, canoes or peddle boats.

Two of Austria's lakes, Millstatter See and Zell am See, are renowned for their water temperature, and the cleanliness of the water in all alpine lakes is something that you come to expect (and receive!).

In summer time, families flock to the Swiss and Austrian lakes to enjoy all kinds of activities from fishing and swimming to boating and windsurfing. Lakeside cafes are abuzz with locals and tourists alike, and why not? Who can say no to a cold drink and a slice of the local gateau whilst relaxing by the banks of a shimmering lake? It's one of my favourite pastimes and one I always look forward to when returning to Austria or Switzerland.
