Dutch Soccer Fans at Euro 2008Our 2008 holiday in Europe coincided with the European Football Championships and with two soccer-loving sons, it couldn't have been better. The Championships were hosted by Switzerland and Austria, with games being held in many different cities over the month-long competition. Most nights during our stay we were able to watch the games on TV, and as the Championships are such are big deal in Europe, the media coverage was huge.

We arrived in the Swiss capital of Bern on the day that the Netherlands were to play against Romania. As Bern was the 'home base' for the Dutch during the tournament, the streets were full of Dutch fans wearing their national colour of orange. There was a real party atmosphere in the streets with a Fanzone, large screens for fans who weren't attending the game that night to watch, market stalls and lots and lots of people.

As we wandered the streets soaking up the atmosphere, these Dutch fans started chatting to the kids and asked could they pose for some photos. They were having such a great time their enthusiasm was catching. They couldn't believe we were from Australia!

And just for the record - Netherlands defeated Romania 2-0.
