A double room doesn't always mean a double bed!

A double room doesn't always mean a double bed!

Double hotel roomOne thing you might find surprising about European hotels and lodgings is that they don't always offer double beds as we know them in Australia. Many establishments that I have stayed in, from hotels to cottages and apartments, have two single beds (usually king singles) pushed together with a 'double' sheet joining the two together, or two single mattresses on a double base. More often than not when this is the case, two 'single' doonas will be provided rather than a double or queen size doona.

This is fairly typical in lots of European accommodation, even in the 'brand' name hotels like Holiday Inn, Novotel, etc.

On a recent trip to Scandinavia, three of the five hotels I stayed in had two twin beds pushed together. The other two hotels had two single beds separated by a bedside table. When we enquired about a double bed, one hotel told us they didn't have any double beds in the hotel at all!

If you specifically require a double bed, it's best to check directly with the hotel or accommodation owner to confirm they have noted your request and can meet it.
