Bayerisch Eisenstein, Germany
|
Situated in the Bavarian Forest near the German/Czech Republic border, Bayerisch Eisenstein is a wonderful destination for nature lovers and those looking for a peaceful get away. Perched on the edge of Germany's oldest national park, Bayerisch Eisenstein is a walker's paradise. From a gentle forest stroll to a former woodcutter's cottage where you can enjoy lunch, to the challenge of a hike up the Grosser Arber mountain, it's all there waiting for you. Experience the dappled light of the forest glades as you walk round a glacial lake, or panoramic vistas from mountain summits - this very special part of the world has a lot to offer. You can even take a walk across the former Iron Curtain.
The gondola to Arber If your kind of walk is a gentle stroll, meander along the river Regen, taking the peaceful path along the canal which was built to feed a small hydroelectric station in the 1900s. Or just wander around the village and take in the sights, including the Neo-Baroque church of St. Johann Nepomuk.
Cycling and mountain biking are popular, and skiing is a favourite winter pastime for both locals and visitors.
The town boasts the only railway station in Europe which is divided between two countries, and an exhibition on the history of the railway through both WWI and WW2, is worth a visit. Also popular is the glassworks which holds regular glassblowing demonstrations. Glass was the major industry of the region for many centuries and the glass shops at nearby Spiegelau, Zwiesel and Bodenmais sell some fine examples of the local craft.
For magnificent views, take the cable car to the top of the Arber Mountain. Be sure to walk on up to the summit and take the circular walk around it for the best possible views of the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests.
With its ideal location, half way between Munich and Prague, Bayerisch Eisenstein is a great base for trips further afield. The 'three rivers town' of Passau is within easy reach, as are Regensburg, Salzburg and Berchtesgaden.
View of the village from Arber Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is picture book pretty with narrow streets wrapped around the river and dominated by a very unusual castle. It makes for a great day trip, as does the Czech capital of Prague, which is only two hours drive away.
The best thing about Bayerisch Eisenstein, though, is that it offers something for everyone. For those who want to be active and see as much of this beautiful region as possible, there is plenty on offer and for the holiday-maker who just wants to relax and perhaps take the occasional stroll through the forest, he won't be disappointed.
