Slovenia - Europe in Miniature

Lake Bled, SloveniaSlovenia is a tiny country, only half the size of Switzerland, often known as "Europe in Miniature" due to its magnificent and varied scenery. It has a rich and complicated history, formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until World War 1.  These days, Slovenia is visited for its diverse and beautiful scenery from mountains that are home to world class ski resorts to the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean. The changing landscape is constantly surprising, time and again. In fact, you can have one eye on the sea, then look in the other direction and be surrounded by high mountains.

As in Prague, there's no shortage of attractions here with the magnificent castle watching over the elegant town square, and an abundance of Baroque and Renaissance architecture. With it's inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1992, Cesky Krumlov now attracts vast numbers of tourists every year, particularly in summer, and not many of them go away disappointed.

The Principality of Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein The tiny principality of Liechtenstein is often a ‘blink or you’ll miss it’ part of a European holiday itinerary, but the country should be considered as more than just another place to tick off on your ‘been there, done that’ list.

Lake Garda - Italy's secret holiday paradise

Riva del Garda, Italy When most Australians plan a holiday to Italy, the cities of Rome, Florence, Pisa and Venice usually head up their list of must-see places to visit. Suggest Lake Garda, or Lago di Garda, (as it’s known in Italian) to them, and they will probably look at you in bewilderment.

Thanks to George Clooney, many Aussies have heard of Lake Como, where he owns a luxurious lakeside villa, but Italy’s biggest lake, Lake Garda, still remains a virtual unknown to the average Aussie tourist. It is, however, definitely worth a visit, and offers something for all ages.

Bern, the beautiful capital of Switzerland

Bern, SwitzerlandSwitzerland’s capital, Bern, is often overlooked on a European itinerary, but it is a city with plenty to offer the visitor.  Located in the Swiss Mittelland (middle land) region, Bern is within easy reach of many of Switzerland’s more popular destinations but warrants at least of couple of days to discover this historic city which was added to UNESCO’s world heritage list in 1983.

Founded way back in 1191, the city was built to offer protection on three sides with the River Aare providing protection on the fourth.  In 1405 most of the city was destroyed by fire.  Rebuilding started almost immediately in sandstone and many of these buildings still remain.  The clock tower, which still stands today, was the city’s first gate and is one of the most important landmarks in Bern.  More than 800 years later, visitors can watch the clockwork figures perform every hour, and admire the intricate clock face which was added in 1530.

Eurocamp - affordable family holidays in Europe

Eurocamp family holidays in EuropeWith the long flight time between Australia and the UK and Europe, most Australians holiday on the continent for at least four weeks. Without a doubt, one of the greatest expenses of a European holiday is the cost of accommodation and this is especially so when travelling with children. Most hotels and B & B’s only accommodate a maximum of two guests, (occasionally 3), so for a family of four, two rooms must be paid for – doubling the family’s accommodation bill. This would, understandably, deter many families from planning a European holiday, but family-friendly alternatives are available.

When considering our first family holiday to Europe in 2000, a friend who had lived in England mentioned Eurocamp, an English company who offer camping and mobile home holidays in Europe. We phoned for a brochure, and when it arrived a week or so later, we were impressed with the variety of accommodation styles and destinations available.
